Our DJ’s hols may finally be over…

Ok, up. We can be right lazy. Hence our lack of action here. But we’re on it again…

Looks like we’re finally back in the game too. Made up to be spinnin’ in ‘ around Notts tahn again.

Next up’s our resi slots at Golden Fleece on Saturday 18th December ’21 then The Angel Microbrewery on Saturday 15th January ’22. Catch us on 3rd Saturday every month. Alt slots monthly into ’22.

We’ve also had a grand time spinning at The Bodega too. Got an irregular resi there too. Nice to mix things up.

We’re still spinning for our Barrel House Radio mukkas. Every other Saturday night, 8-9pm. Been a year long ride so far. Grand to be part of the BHR fam.

Still in very serious times, people. Who know’s where we’re going. Please stay safe. folks.

Last one. Here’s a juicy taste of what we’ve dropped these past months…

“Gonna get high ’til the day I die…”

Denise Johnson 1963- 2020

This poxy year just gets better. So sad to hear of Denise Johnson’s untimely passing.

Heard the news a few days back and thought it was wind up like when the news of Andrew Weatherall’s death hit. It wasn’t.

Just 56, (like The Guvnor) when she died, Denise was the voice of Screamadelica. No question.

She owned those songs on that long player and made the Scream soar – yes, really. It was Denise and Andrew Weatherall who took that band out of the indie ghetto.

Not forgetting how she brought shining soul to A Certain Ratio, whom she collaborated with for nearly three decades. Denise played a critical part in reinstating ACR’s long overdue position as post-punk pioneers.

So another one gone way too soon.

Rest in power, Denise.

Goodbye To The Guvnor…

Andrew Weatherall

Andrew Weatherall 1963 – 2020

We just couldn’t believe fathom it when we saw the tweet late afternoon on Monday 17th February. Thought it was a wind up. Not the best one either.

We dug in then it hit as the tweets piled in from all over. Not a wind up, Andrew Weatherall had died in the early hours. He was 56 years old. No age.

So much intense love and emotion has been shared throughout this week. Overwhelming. It was beautiful to see so many memories and tales being offered up by so many.

We’ve got our own vivid memories of The Guvnor and his musical legacy. Yep, “Loaded” was the first drop we noticed. When his My Bloody Valentine rework landed then we got hooked.

Followed him hard since then. Backed off around time of Two Lone Swordsmen (too abrasive even for us…) then headed back in early 00s. In the last ten years or so, he was on a massive ride going to all sorts of destinations artistically, musically and thematically. Maybe he knew.

The dubs, remixes and sessions just kept coming. A Love From Outer Space became his church alongside ALFOS partner, Sean Johnston.

Now he’s left us way too soon. No one got near him. No one will ever get near him.

Nearly a week on, we’re still struggling. Had to do something. So we’re collab’g with our big mates at Jam Cafe’ to celebrate his peerless legacy on Saturday 7th March.

Dropping a messy cocktail of his sublime remixes, solo tunes ‘n key connections from 9 ’til late.

Join us as we say goodbye to The Guvnor by raising several glasses and having a dance floor chug or two. Taster of what to expect (or not…) is here.

And one of our favourite Weatherall mixes is just below. Rockabilly vibes drop. Via The Guvnor.

One we did ourselves. For The Guvnor.

We’re back. For a bit.

Lit stage at Bonobo concert

Thought we bung down some lines. Must tighten up that slack.

What we been up to? All sorts for sure. DJ gigs at various places including our usual resi at The Angel Microbrewery, some great sessions at Broadway Cinema, The Golden Fleece and others besides.

Recent standouts were a massive Notts Pride ’18 in July (3 slots that day!) and two fundraising sessions in June for Framework – The Get Down with NG83 crew and The Big Spin arranged by Synthetic Pro Audio fellas. Fantastic to be part of all those special bashes.

Also been to some crackin’ gigs in the last few months. Bonobo at Ally Pally, London and A Certain Ratio at Hare and Hounds, Brum. Yep, A Certain Ratio. Both were amazing for very different reasons. Still buzzin’ from those…

Got some long overdue downtime time coming up but we’ll shoehorn our August Angel resi sesh in before that. We’ll be back there in early September too.  We’re also doing a tight dub ‘n reggae slot at the special Punk It Up Rock Against Racism event on September 15th at Rough Trade Nottingham. Really looking forward to that one. Gonna be special, we reckon.

That’s it. Social’s where we make our real noise day in, day out. More fun too. Join us there for a right old chin wag if you fancy.

‘Til next time…

2018’s landed with a bang. Kind of.

LCD Soundsystem, Alley Pally

What a bleedin’ year 2017 was, eh!?! Pretty fuk’d up in some ways but fantastic in others.

Some cracking big gigs – LCD Soundsystem at Ally Pally, London. Kraftwerk and Nick Cave, both here right in Notts. All amazing experiences. Not forgetting the mighty Don Letts on rockin’ the ones ‘n twos at Rough Trade too.

Been playing out a few times since we last touched this. Our usual resi at The Angel Microbrewery, Broadway, SoBar and The Lord Roberts to name a few. Pix ‘n blurb are up across our usual social gubbins. You know just where to look.

Gonna be bunkering in for January. Back out spinnin’ for our first resi sesh of 2018 at The Angel Microbrewery on Friday 2nd February. We’ll keep dropping sweet nuggets on the first Friday of every month. Grand. Thanks to Ben and Steve for having us back. Obliged.

We’re also made up to be part of a very special Selectadisc celebration on Sunday 11th February. Site of that legendary record emporium is now home to Ugly Bread Bakery. UBB crew have wanted to pay homage to Selectadisc for ages and now it’s happening. There’ll be DJs doing their thing in tight 30 mins’ mini-slots, vinyl ‘n merch for sale and plenty of food ‘n drink. We’ll be spinning post-punk wax from 1.30 ’til 2pm. Join us.

We’ll be DJ’g again at The Lord Roberts sometime in February too. Hoping to make that a regular thing. More info to come, folks.

Don’t forget, you can get a cheeky taste of our sessions at
Mixcloud.com. We’re also dropping mixtapes over at Evermix.fm as well.

That’s it. Take it easy. Hope to see ya’s very soon.

Nearly summer time, ain’t it?

We also had a proper blast playing wax on Record Store Day ’17. We were lucky enough to play at Rough Trade Nottingham, The Bodega and The Angel Microbrewery. Busy one, then. Good to see Hockley ’n Notts buzzin’ so much that day. We even bought a few records too.
